The shale-oil resource for the entire oil-shale sequence is estimated at 270 million barrels (Macauley and others, 1984), or about 37 million tons of shale oil. The oil shale consists of interbedded dolomitic marlstone, laminated marlstone, and clayey marlstone. At that time, it was not economically viable as the oil was trapped in shale (fine sedimentary rocks). The Alberta Bakken Bakken is a Devonian Shale light oil play stretching from Southern Alberta into Montana covering a large land area (>100 miles). Although the Bakken is the targeted zone, there is multi-zone oil potential (deepest to The Duvernay Shale was deposited as organic-rich mudstone, a fine-grained rock, that extends beneath 130 000 square kilometers of Alberta, or about 20% of the province. Tight natural gas and oil resources are trapped in the fine pores of the rock, and can be extracted through a combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Shale gas is natural gas that is attached to, or "adsorbed" onto, organic matter or is contained in thin, porous silt or sand beds interbedded in the shale. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is evaluating the shale gas resource potential of all prospective shale gas formations in Alberta. As many as 15 prospective shale gas formations have

28 Nov 2013 Geologists have known for decades that oil and gas lay hidden inside Alberta's Duvernay shale, a vast underground Ltd. next year as it starts drilling clusters of wells from single production “pads” in the play's northern half.

The Devonian Duvernay Shale is an oil and natural gas field located in Alberta, Canada ( in the Kaybob area ) which extends into British Columbia. The Duvernay Shale, which can be found just north of the Montney Shale , is quickly becoming one of the hottest oil discoveries in Canada due to some of the best drilling results we've seen in the area.
