The U.S. debt rose from $17 billion in 1929 to more than $22.7 trillion in September 2019. The biggest causes are defense spending and recessions.
The Obama tax cuts added $858 billion to the debt in two years. Obama's budget increased defense spending to between $700 billion and $800 billion a year. Federal income was down, thanks to lower tax receipts from the 2008 financial crisis. He also sponsored the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The United States federal government has continuously had a fluctuating public debt since its formation in 1789, except for about a year during 1835–1836, a period in which the nation, during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, completely paid the national debt.To allow comparisons over the years, public debt is often expressed as a ratio to gross domestic product (GDP).
Therefore, the chart shows the debt as a percentage of the U.S. economy. I.e., in 1940, the federal debt equaled $50.696 billion and the economy was $98.2 billion. Therefore, the federal debt as a percentage of GDP equaled 51.6%. Blank years of 1937, 1938, and 1939 have been added to make the year markers match presidential terms.
